Tops on the Art Chart - The Wind Seller, Rachael Preston's second novel, earned her the Literary Award

The City of Hamilton Arts Awards -- considered the Oscars of the local arts community -- honoured three people at its annual ceremony.

Awards chair Patti Cannon said the winners exemplify the true spirit of the awards and honour both their artistic accomplishments and community work.

Cannon said the volunteer component is particularly important because their work has helped keep the arts alive.

The winners were also involved in the mentoring of younger artists.

"It's so difficult to survive as an artist and the younger artists look to experienced artists for inspiration," said Cannon.

Rachael Preston said she was thrilled to win the Literary Award for her second novel (The Wind Seller).

She also won for her volunteer work in the local writers' community. Last year was Preston's second year of organizing gritLIT, a Hamilton writer's festival that attracted more than 30 writers from across Canada and the U.S.

"I really think it's important to keep Hamilton on the map in terms of the writers here," said Preston.

In addition to her roles as writer and organizer, she teaches creative writing at Mohawk and Sheridan colleges and in Waterloo. Preston is also a judge for Power of the Pen.

Cheryl Takacs took home the Visual Arts Award for her glass sculptures and her ongoing work with the regional Designer Crafts juried exhibition, which she founded.

For many years, Takacs has nurtured emerging artists and given them work experience in her studio.

In the Theatre Award category, Cannon said Dani Podetz was the hands-down winner for his excellence in set design.

Podetz has worked in the field of set design for more than 50 years and is an "absolute perfectionist." said Cannon. "Everyone who has worked with him says he does a lot of research into the show before he designs anything."

The City of Hamilton Arts Awards were founded in 1975. Past recipients include singers Jackie Washington and Jude Johnson; the late Christine Hamilton of the Geritol Follies; author Spencer Dunmore; artist and Festival of Friends founder Bill Powell; dance instructor Lois Laxton; and the recently retired Glenn Mallory of the Hamilton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.

Winners were presented with their awards and a cheque for $1,000 during a ceremony at City Hall.

Writer Unfolds Secrets in her Second Novel
By Shella Gardezi

On Saturday, Hamilton-based author Rachael Preston was the first author in what the Grimsby Authors Series hopes will be a series of special presentations.

Preston read from her second novel The Wind Seller at the Grimsby Public Art Gallery's Wayzgoose.

Preston says she was inspired to write the novel by a trip she took to the Bay of Fundy. While there she discovered a box of books on writing that a Great Village resident, Noble Matheson, ordered from a bookseller in New York in 1922.

After learning more about the man and his family, Preston began to wonder more about his history and what he would have been planning to write. At that time the $5 he spent on the box of books would have been a large sum of money.

"I took it upon myself to write about Noble," she says, although the work is fictional.

However, as she was writing the voice of another character, Hetty Douglas, a former nurse and survivor of the Halifax explosion became stronger leading to a "dual narrative" structure.

When a ship arrives in their village, it brings a compelling mystery to their lives, which the author unfolds over the course of the novel.

Preston immigrated from Yorkshire, England, at the age of 16 and has lived in Ontario and British Columbia. She plans to return to British Columbia to concentrate on her writing this year.

Preston acknowledges that some may question the "authenticity" of an outsider writing from an Atlantic Canada point of view. However, she said she fell in love with the area during her visit.

"I couldn't not write about it," she said. "I didn't think about 'appropriation of voice' until afterward."

When the reviews came in from Atlantic Canada, she was relieved to find they were mostly positive. As a creative writing instructor at Mohawk and Sheridan Colleges, Preston says she worries more about the authenticity of the writer's voice.

"A writer can be like an actor because they both go into their roles," she says. "I caution my students against writing from a distance rather than writing from inside the story."

Preston's first novel was Tent of Blue (2002) and she is currently working on a third novel set in Hamilton.

Organizer Ken Boichuk says the popular Grimsby Authors Series is planning to expand its offerings with a "special presentation" series. These events will provide readings for smaller, more specialized audiences in genres such as home and garden, fantasy or anything else Grimsby residents are interested in reading.
